Becoming a Family History Pro: Help Please

Green Embossed Tree of Life Leather Journal - LinedSo I always hear how important family history is and really want to get started, but I honestly have no idea how.  I’ve been told to start with myself, which I’ve done.  I journal, scrapbook, blog, my ancestors will think I’m a complete narcissist, so I’m covered there.  Now what?  I’ve gone on familysearch.org, but the tutorials I saw were are all unavailable, no joke.  Any pros out there willing to give me suggestions on where to begin?  P.S. Use small words.  I am completely ignorant in all things family history.  Thanks!

  1. I think it is great that you have started your personal history. That is a great blessing to your children. Typically they say to start with your grandparents when you start doing your family history. There is a program you can download call PAF which is a great way to keep your records and search. Then you can go onto newfamilysearch.com to search more info. you just have to create a login and password and start searching what might already be done. I also suggest you get a binder started when you do this with pedigree charts as well as family group sheets you can download from your PAF file. I am happy to help you get started since that is where I am at too. Fun stuff!

  3. So, Josh and I are actually taking a Family History Sunday School class on Family History right now, though I am still in the process of learning (hence the class), but use new.familysearch.com and put in your parents, siblings, etc. You'll have to do that manually, because they aren't dead, so they won't be in the database. But, if one of your ancestors is you can search for them and then add them to your family tree, and then if they are linked to other people it will be automatically linked into your tree!

I would talk to your parents and see what they've done, know, and where they have been stumped.
