Becoming a Cake Decorator
Have I mentioned how much I LOVE fall? I made this cake in honor of the best season of the year. Have a great weekend, everybody!
Becoming a Cake Decorator: Union Jack
I don't know about you, but I LOVED the royal wedding. The dress-GORGEOUS! My sister Janelle is staying with us for a week, and we knew we had to celebrate. We didn't watch it in the wee hours of Friday morning. Instead, we stayed up till 3AM Friday night watching the wedding/behind the scenes. It was way fun (And then we slept in on Saturday instead of going to work tired on Friday!) We made this British flag cake in honor of the festivities. Twizzlers pull 'n peel for the red lines and blueberries for in-between. We tried a new chocolate cake recipe which is listed below. I obviously didn't eat it, but the gluten eaters in the house enjoyed it!
Chocolate Buttermilk Cake:
Blend 2 cups of sugar and 2 cups of flour
Boil 1 cup water, 2 cubs margarine, and 4 Tbsp cocoa
Pour over sugar and flour mixture and stir together
Add 2 eggs, 1 Tbsp. vanilla, 1 tsp baking soda, 1/2 cup buttermilk
Mix together and pour into a greased pan
Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes
What did you think of the royal wedding?

Becoming a Cake Popper: Grad Hats
Landon Paul graduates TODAY!
So I made these.
Bakerella shows you how here. (I used Ghiradelli instead of Godiva and Twizzler's pull 'n peel instead of Airheads Extremes. Then I wrapped styrofoam in blue wrapping paper and stacked them like bleachers).
HAPPY GRADUATION, LANDON PAUL!

*Cake Tip: Grease the pan with shortening, line the pan with a piece of wax paper to fit the bottom, and re-grease the top of the wax paper. Then pour in the batter. When it's time to put it on the cooling rack, it slides right off without any crumbs! What cake tips do you have?*
Becoming a Cake Decorator: Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday to my sister, Janelle! We made this cake in honor of the auspicious occasion.
-Pepperoni made of fondant
-Red frosting for pizza sauce
-Shredded white chocolate for cheese
I put a TON of food coloring in, but it turned out more pink than red. Any idea why that happened? We just pretended pink was her favorite color, and it was intentional. Does anyone have any favorite cake decorating blogs/websites? I'm always looking for new ideas. Have a great weekend!
Becoming a Cake Decorator: The Graduates
Last night we had our last level 2 class.
They gave us certificates and everything, so now we're legit. :)
I'm taking it to our neighborhood Halloween party tonight. It's not exactly spooky, but I like it! Also, thank you so much for your ideas on how to fix my crocheting. Ali, I definitely start loose and get tighter...and I might not be counting either. Time to try again!
Becoming a Cake Decorator: Pretty Flowers
Thank you so much for your comments helping me with favorites!!! I'm noticing a serious daisy trend! I'm going to do some research and find my all-time fave. It's so helpful getting ideas from you guys! THANK YOU! As far as cake decorating goes, I have a new fave: The lily. Easy to make and easy on the eyes. I took this picture after I had let them sit and melt a little bit...my bad, but I like the concept of these ones. Once again my royal icing was being sassy, but next week we have butter cream! Hoo-rah! Landon Paul is really excited, because butter cream tastes way better than royal icing (In addition to being way easier to use). Everyone wins! Our final class is this Wednesday, and I think I"ll bring the cake to our neighborhood Halloween party. I love 2-for-1 specials!
Becoming a Cake Decorator: Lessons Learned
In last week’s cake decorating class, I learned some very important things...from unfortunate experience.
1: DO NOT GET EGG YOLK I
N YOUR ROYAL ICING. The tiniest amount will make the icing that should be thick ridiculously runny.
2. Royal Icing is very thick and dries quickly. It can and probably will dry in your icing bag.
3. When you get frustrated with your royal icing (and you will), be careful not to squeeze too hard. Your tube will explode.
I have every hope that tomorrow’s class will be better. Our flowers didn’t turn out so cute, because my frosting was so thin, and Jenn’s was super thick. Better luck next time, right? I have high hopes. What’s your best cake decorating tip?

Becoming a Cake Decorator: Level Two
Our handiwork!
I think everyone and their dog should take a cake decorating class. It's an hour and a half of giggling girl time-how fun is that? Interesting fact we learned: People prefer eating cakes in pastel colors than dark colors. Who knew?
Becoming a Cake Decorator
I hope you had as wonderful a weekend as I did. We were able to watch General Conference which was such a lift. I always leave with a renewed commitment to live my faith better. This week I start level two of my cake decorating class. A little history: For a year and a half, Jenn (Blond in the picture) and I worked together for 4-8 hours a day (depending on the time of year). In situations like that, you can either become the best of friends or drive each other completely crazy. Considering we are the same person, we happened to become the best of friends. I graduated and got a big kid job, so this summer, mostly so we could keep hanging out, we signed up for a cake decorating class, and our life was forever changed. This Wednesday we start level two, and I’m pumped. I’ll be sure to share the cake decorating tips we learn, so you can join in the fun, too!
A tip from level one: Laminate a 3x5 card, and use the straight edge to flatten the frosting. Works SO WELL.
Becoming a Cake Decorator: Kids Weekend
This weekend we had four of my cousins stay in our 2-bedroom apartment while their parents were on vacation. We had SO MUCH FUN. We learned important things like, we have "boring cereal." (We quickly ran to get Cap'n Crunch). I learned that I "Don't act like a grown-up" (Don't I know it). Landon Paul was informed that it was "awful" that he had to go to school AND work and also learned who Selena Gomez is. The girls were in a fit of giggles at the fact that he had never heard of her before.
Bailey informed us that she was "Trying to cut back on her salt, because salt can stop your heart, and she likes hers." She also said "This is a good chance to see if you guys can handle kids. You have 3 middle schoolers and an elementary schooler. How are you taking it?" She is an organizational queen and wanted me to write down each plan for the day, a girl of my own heart. (I had already written down a plan for each day, so it was no problem). Kirtley was my cleaner. She could always be found straightening the towels and blankets. One time I couldn't find her, and she was in our bedroom putting Landon Paul's clothes away! I told her he was a big boy, and he had to do those himself.
We watched movies all night long, Ice Age 2, Little Rascals, Furry Vengeance, Night at the Museum 2, Where the Red Fern Grows, etc. We also ate our weight in junk food: Pizza, Bagel Bites, grilled cheese, s'mores, cake, which reminds me...I need to exercise. The girls said their most favorite part of the weekend was decorating this cake, so I thought I'd post those pics first.
Chocolate cake, pudding filling, and butter cream frosting! Delightful!
We all love pink, so we really had no choice!
Didn't they do great? I love these girls!
