Book Club was great. There were five of us there. One lady was in her 70s, two were in their late 30s, one in late 20s, and me. I always seem to be the youngest in every group I’m in, but I don’t mind. It was great. All of the women were intelligent, and we had a really thoughtful discussion on the book. It was especially nice hearing from the oldest woman whose life experiences really touched us. We were talking about how different things are than they were in Revolutionary times. She told us how much things had changed just in her lifetime. Her parents had ridden in a horse and buggy to get married! She remembers their first TV and when her dad learned to drive their brand new Model-T car. It was really neat.
It was a good group size, too. We all had a chance to give our thoughts without feeling like we were interrupting each other. I will definitely go again. I learned that it’s fun no matter what your age or life experience. One was a widow, one had 5 young kids, I have no kids :(, but we were able to talk despite our different life stages.
Book Club Review: It's social, you're reading something that has a deadline (so you actually read it), you don't have to worry about what to read next, and books that you end up reading books you wouldn't otherwise read. It's funny that that is also the bummer: You're not choosing your own books, but they're good books, so it's all good. So far you've recommended I read A Tale of Two Cities, Jane Eyre, Peter and the Starcatchers, and The Hound of the Baskervilles. I've read Jane Eyre but none of the others. Any other recommendations?
Our next book is The Secret Life of Bees. Has anyone read it? Is it any good?
My roommate is obsessed with that book and has read it a couple of times. Have you seen the movie? It's pretty great.

ReplyDeleteYou should read The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. It's adorable. Peace Like A River is great as well.
