Becoming a Cake Decorator

I made this cake for a Relief Society event last night.  It was sooo easy!  I just put Kit Kats on the outside, covered the top in m&ms, and wrapped it with a ribbon.  Try it!

*Cake Tip: Grease the pan with shortening, line the pan with a piece of wax paper to fit the bottom, and re-grease the top of the wax paper.  Then pour in the batter.  When it's time to put it on the cooling rack, it slides right off without any crumbs!  What cake tips do you have?*

  3. That was your cake?! I totally almost made the same one last night, but then I decided to try out my new giant cupcake mold. (Bad idea) I'm super glad I didn't because having two of those cakes there just woulda cut down on the awesome-ness of it.

My cake tip is... when using a mold, do not use olive oil to grease it. It just doesn't work as well. (For some reason I use that to grease things, even though my olive oil sprayer is really for stuff like chicken. I just keep forgetting to buy some more PAM.)

  6. That looks so yummy! Cake tip: grease the pan (whether it's with shortening or Pam, doesn't matter) then sprinkle some flower in the pan. Shake the pan around so it's all evenly distributed. It keeps the batter separated and I don't worry if the paper is going to somehow get mixed in with the cake (though I've used that way too). Also, the outside of the cake isn't greasy when you pull it out.
