For mutual Wednesday night we learned about family history. My favorite part was learning about Create Fan. It imports your family history information into a fan like this. You are the circle in the center, and it shows all of your ancestors. Cool, right?
Becoming a Family History Pro
Well I decided to give family history another try. This time I used this great family history lab link to get me started. Did you know I'm from Norway and England? (Do people from there have a tendency to sunburn easy? Cause I sure do!) We have records back to the 1400s on one line! Can you imagine? I also learned that on my dad's side of the family, a bunch of them had 10 kids! OW, right? On one side I found some missing information that I know my family has. It's time to get crackin!

This weekend we had a sleepover at my grandparentals house. It was epic. We went to Robintino's where they had GLUTEN-FREE PIZZA! OH MY GOSH! IT WAS THE MOST DELICIOUS THING I'VE EATEN IN TWO MONTHS, but I digress. We had a grand time with the grandparentals and heard some great stories about our ancestors. Apparently, we are Scandinavian, British, and 1/64 Irish. (I was personally a little disappointed we didn't have more Irish. It would have been a great excuse to have a big St. Patty's Day party, but 1/64 is something)! Do you do anything to celebrate St. Patrick's Day? I try to make green food, but it usually doesn't look so good lol. I want ideas!
Becoming a Family History Pro: Help Please
So I always hear how important family history is and really want to get started, but I honestly have no idea how. I’ve been told to start with myself, which I’ve done. I journal, scrapbook, blog, my ancestors will think I’m a complete narcissist, so I’m covered there. Now what? I’ve gone on familysearch.org, but the tutorials I saw were are all unavailable, no joke. Any pros out there willing to give me suggestions on where to begin? P.S. Use small words. I am completely ignorant in all things family history. Thanks!
Becoming a Family History Pro: Grandma Sweetie Pie
Grandma always called her grandkids sweetie pie. My cousin Bryan, then a toddler, started calling her Grandma Sweetie Pie, and the name just stuck. Over the Fourth of July weekend, grandma and I had a wonderful talk, and I was able to get to know her much better.Harriet Lerner said, "We are never the first in our family to wrestle with a problem, although it may feel that way...Learning how other family members have handled their problems similar to our own down through the generations, is one of the most effective routes to lowering reactivity and heightening self-clarity” (The Dance of Anger. 117-118).
Grandma Sweetie Pie and I have similar medical problems, and I first asked her about it so I could tell the doctor about my family's medical history history. Our conversation quickly evolved into sharing how to handle it-physically and emotionally. I have lamented that it must have been easier "Back in the day" for various reasons, but my eyes were opened to see that there were challenges back then that I hadn't thought of. Medicine has improved so much which gives us greater hope then they used to have. She told me stories of my extended family who have had the same challenges and felt strengthened by their courage and success.
Talk to your grandparents, talk to your relatives, find out about where you came from, and have a wonderful weekend.

Becoming a Family History Pro: Grandma Suzie
Growing up I never lived very close to my grandparents, but I always felt we were close despite the distance. In the last few months, I've really tried to get to know my grandmas and have been able to have a good conversation with each of them. Talking with my Grandma Suzie was a blast. She told me about her and grandpa's courtship. They were high school sweethearts, and she said how excited she was when he would pull up in his cool car. (He interrupted and told me what a lame car it was, but she insisted that he looked great in it). She remembered the giddy feeling so vividly after all of their years of marriage. It was so sweet. She also told me about her mother who I knew very little about. My great-grandmother was a modern woman. She was the only mom my grandma knew that worked, and she loved it. Grandma said that she should have been born later, because she would have been marching for women's rights and equality.
Apparently, years ago, great-grandma found a house that she completely fell in love with and that they could afford. When they went to the bank, their offer was denied because my great-grandma's salary "didn't count." Apparently only the husbands' salary made a difference in those days, and grandpa's salary alone didn't allow them to qualify for the house. Grandma was furious and devastated. They bought another, instead, but I was so surprised. I had no idea it used to be that way.
How well do you know your grandparents? I'm realizing I don't know mine as well as I'd like to, and I'm loving learning more about them. Visit them and listen. You'll be amazed at how similar you are and how much you will learn.
Becoming a Family History Pro: Scrapbooking
So I was recently informed that, in some circles, scrapbooking is considered family history work! Since I've never been any good at family history work but have always loved scrapbooking-I consider this a victory!
I have also been trying out my new cricket! It's great. It makes my pages look SO MUCH BETTER!
